  2. I do not agree to the comment stated.

I feel that it is important to have both good quality responses and appropriate dress code to create a good first impression. Although I agree that the responses are one of the most important factors to consider during interviews, dressing up appropriately will show the interviewers that you are keen and had made the effort to look professionally.

More often than not, interviewers tend to look at an interviewee's dress code first before evaluating his/her performance. And most of the time, although the interviewee had made great effort in performing well, he/she may lose the job opportunity just because of poor dress code and failing to look professional. Therefore, I feel that it is equally important to have proper dress code and good quality responses.

  3. I do not agree with the statement.

I feel that both first visual impression and quality of response are equally important. I believed giving good first impression shows that you are keen in the job and respect the interviewer.

Wearing sloppily for interview may result in misconception about you being unprofessional and interviewer may not want to listen to your interview there on.

Moreover, if you only have good visual impression and no quality of response, the interviewer might feel frustrated or bored after awhile. And, he/she is definitely not going to hire you based on the poor quality of response you gave.

It takes both hands to clap for good visual impression and good quality of response. I feel that it really impress the interviewer if you have both of these qualities.

  4. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I disagree with the above statement.

I feel that it is very important for one to dress up and project a good visual impression. As the moment you enter the interview room, your interviewer would already be assessing you from the way you dress all the way down to the way you walk. Therefore, it is important to dress well. Besides, dressing up for the interview and making oneself look presentable is important as it shows the interviewer that you care and value the opportunity to have the interview.

I feel that even though the quality of your response during the interview is good but if you dress sloppily, it would lessen your chance of getting shortlisted. Afterall, the purpose of an interview is to enhance your chance of getting shortlisted and employed by the company.

  5. I do agree to a minimal extent, firstly I think that this might be a strategy to acing the interview, because, your first impression is more or less marked down by your interviewer, however if you managed to impress him/her with your wits and your presentation skills, that is going to be a "WOW" factor. Dressing up for the right occasion can be taught.

However as much as i wish to agree to my above statement, I still feel that dressing up for the interview is a plus point and it shows how much you treasure the opportunity for the interview. Therefore both factors have to be present during a interview.

  6. I disagree with the statement. I think that it is important for interviewees to dress up and project a good visual impression to our recruiter.

A dressing could determine the way how you present yourself such as personality. If one makes the effort to dress up for the interview, it shows that this person shows a degree of respect to the job and to the recruiter.

Likewise, the quality of your response is important as well. If he or she only know how to dress appropritely, but does not have any basic knowledge of the job, the chances of qualifying will be slow.

Thus, it is important for interviewees to make an effort on their dressing, and have the relevant knowledge and skills for the job before attending for the interview.

  7. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I disagree with the above statement. Dressing up is important as it gives a good first impression to others. Also, it is a way of letting the interviewer know that you actually do view the interview as important and that you are taking the job seriously.

The quality of response is, of course, important as it allows the interviewer to see that we are eligible for the job, and that we are confident and sure of ourselves.

  8. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

First impression matters. The way we dress up tells a lot about our personality. If I were to attend an interview with singlet and flip flops, it could probably mean that I'm overly casual and can't be bothered. Of course, the quality of response affects one's judgements too.

If there was left with just 1 more position to be filled, and their choices were left with a person wearing a formal top and another wearing a singlet, the interviewees would most probably choose the candidate that's better dressed.

Hence, it is important to dress up and project a good visual impression.

  9. I would have to disagree to a certain extent on the statement above.

Nowadays, people always consider on a person's first visual impression. This is because through firt impression, people somehow will be able to find out how the person is like. Therefore, it is important for the interviewee to dress up and have a look good.

However, there is a saying called "don't judge a book by its cover". This means that although the person may look attractive/ presentable, it does not mean that he or she is qualified for the job. This goes back to how important the quality of the interviewee's response is.

In general, I feel that both factors are important for interviewees to take note of because in job interviews, both appearance and response can determine the interviewee's position for the job.

  10. I do not agree with the statement as I feel that it is important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression.

It is because as humans we tend to judge people by looks. For example before the interview when we first view the candidates, one candidate wears formal wear and dress up smartly while the other wears slippers and shorts, of course we will prefer the one who dress up smartly as he/she will look more professional.

Our presented image will portray the character of the person as in the example; wearing shorts and slippers might give the idea that we are lazy since we do not bother to dress up for an interview or we are not keen to join the company as we are not treating the interview as something serious. In addition, we are not respecting the interviewer. Quality of response does matter too but having a good image portrayed will be a plus point for interviewee to be accepted into the company.

  11. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I disagree with the above statement.

I feel that it is important that interviewees must not neglect their personal appearance and the way they carry themselves during a job interview. As being said that, we only have one chance to make a good impression. In other words, applicants must make positive first impression or else they may not be able to secure the job. It is because once the interviewer gets an idea of you it is hard for them to leave that idea.

Some candidates perceive the point of view of "you can't judge a book by its cover" and rely upon their qualifications to impress the interviewer. Impressive work experience and excellent education are wonderful positive feature to carry into an interview. However, if grooming and manner of dress are not appropriate, the negative impact may ruin the candidates.

One crucial element that is essential to create a good first impression is personality. This can be convey through dressing. Employers want employers that look professional. If the person dresses sloppy, employers may view the employees as not enthusiastic about the job. However, those who portray professional yet enthusiastic will have a higher chance of securing the job in the interview. An outfit says a lot about the interviewees. Even if you are the absolute best at what you do, an interviewer will hesitate to hire you if you show up to an interview wearing baggy jeans, or a stained shirt.

A good first impression will help interviewers/ employers to determine if the interviewees are suitable for a job and be a good person to employ. Therefore, I felt that it's important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression in interview.

Undoubtedly, I believe that it is important for for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual. Like the saying goes, it is the first impression that counts. With the interviewees dressing up, it can also boost their confidence to project themselves better.
Furthermore, the quality of the interviewees' response also matters.Imagine that you has a very good impression by dressing up. However, the response were not very ideal. Thus, the interview will be scewed up.

'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'
I totally disagree with the above statement, as I believe that first impression counts.
Although it is important to have a quality response during the interview, it is still important to dress up appropriately and project a good first visual impression. The reason being is that before you have any interaction with the interviewer, he/she would have looked at you from the top to the bottom and they will have evaluated you from there.
Imagine you are an interviewer, an applicant entered an interview with something very sloppy or dressing that is not professional enough, will you as an interviewer be tuned off? I felt that, one would have marked that applicant down even if he/she had a very good quality response. One might also think that the applicant is not prepared for the interview and this would leave a bad impression.
However on the other hand, if one is dress up but does not have a quality response during the interview, he/she would still be marked down. This is because there is no substance in the response and this would also reflect that applicant is not prepared and may thus be unsuitable for the job.
To sum up, it is important to dress up and project a good first visual impression and also having a quality response.

  14. I do not agree with the above statement. In fact, research has shown that a first impression, which is also the first visual impression, do matter apart from the quality of response during an interview.

As one who has been an interviewer before, I personally do look at how one dress up to gauge how they feel the interview is to them. Some of them did go to the interview in slippers and shorts and barely passed the criteria under appearance even though they may have scored well in eloquence and attitude.

On the other hand, I do face people who dressed up for the occasion but did not give quality response, which also affected the overall scoring key. Thus it is important that an interviewee has both good first impression and quality response.

  15. Presentation at Interviews:

I would disagree with this comment as I believe that first impressions count and this includes how a person (interviewer) would perceive the candidate through his/her dressing.

One would assume that the way you dress for an important meeting can somehow be related to how one conducts his/herself or even the way work is done. In this case, if a candidate were to walk in in sloppy clothes without preparing his/herself well, the interviewer may assume that the work this person would hand in (should they be hired) would be carelessly done.

I dont disagree that speaking well in an interview plays a part, however, one cannot deny that the visual element plays just an important role in an interview as well.

  16. To begin with, i agree with the statement to a certain extend. I personally feel that it is true when we say that the quality of response is the most important criteria when it comes to judging how efficient a person might be.

However, we cannot deny that fact that human beings are very visual and no matter how objective a person might be, there is a high chance that they will form a first impression from what they see. Hence it is very important to dress up to give other a good first impression.

Also, dressing up has another plus point. It is a way of showing the interviewers your sincerity and enthusiasm towards the job. I am sure no one want to hire a person who is sloppy and unmotivated when working.

In conclusion, dressing up to is not a must. However, it is definitely a plus point when it comes to attending interviews for a job.

  17. To a great extent, the quality of a person's response at an interview is vital to projecting a good image of oneself. This is because verbal communication allows one to express their thoughts more clearly across as compared to the appearance of a person.

Nonetheless, i would beg to differ from the statement, 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

Apart from the appropriate responses in an interview, it is definitely just as important for the interviewee to dress up and project a good first visual impression. This is because, the first visual image could bring across non verbal messages to the interviewer about a person's personality, character and even mindsets. For example, if an interviewee came smartly and appropriately dressed for an interview, the interviewer would definitely perceive this person as someone who is serious and genuine about the job as compared to another interviewee who may come in with shorts or slippers.

The first visual image is thus just as important as any other aspect of an interview.

  18. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

What do you think about the comment above?

I disagree... like it or not, we are at a day and age where first impression counts... ALOT.

People are becoming more and more visual. You don't see people buying ugly phones and laptops.
People have higher standards now when it comes to fashion too. And most are willing to spend quite some money in clothings, just so that they can look good.

Thus at an interview, although it is through that quality counts, the outward appearance will have an effect too. A shabby looking man in singlet and shorts and slippers will most likely be marked down as he gives the impression that he does not bother to dress up. And highly likely the interviewers will pay lesser attention to the things that he says.

Thus i believe that it is important for one to dress nicely and appropriately at interviews.

  19. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I disagree with the above statement.

While the quality of the responses generated by the interviewee counts for a lot during an interview, the outfit the interviewee wears is also a statement of his/her professionalism and interest in the job.

Take for example, an employer would not want a sloppy person as his/her secretary because this employee is a face of the organisation. This applies to all job interviews as well. An employee working under the organization is a representative of the company, therefore the image projected by the employee goes far in saying how professional a company may be.

Additionally, the way a person dresses may affect his/her confidence. When a person dresses well and looks professional and clean cut, he/she will definitely be more confident as compared to one who is dressed in shorts, t-shirt and slippers. How confident we carry ourselves to be also affect the quality of our answers, hence it is important to dress up well.

  20. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I strongly disagree with this statement that first visual impression is not important. Besides the quality of the response, visual impression is equally important. If the applicant is not dressed appropriately, no matter how well he/she answers, the employer will not feel comfortable. It will only goes to show that the applicant is not serious about his/her appearance and how she brings out himself/herself. It shows the employer that the applicant is not serious about her work. Dressing up appropriately shows that the applicant puts in effort in preparing herself/himself for the interview. One's dressing can show the attitude of a person. When the applicant comes in for the interview, the first thing that the employer looks at will be the applicant's dressing and appearance. If the applicant does not even take the dressing for the interview seriously, then what about the normal days during work? Thus, I believe that it is very important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression.

  21. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I disagree to the statement, however I feel that there must be a balance of good first impression together with the quality of response during an interview.

During an interview, we dress up smartly to show our level of professionalism as well as how we view this job opportunity. Based on this factor alone, it can create a good first impression to our interviewer to ask questions and look into our portfolio. The quality of your response matters as well as it shows how much you know about the company or how well-prepared you are for the interview. If you give answers which are vague and short, the interviewer might interpret that you do not have sufficient knowledge or skills pertaining to the job and will not bother to ask any further.

Thus, a balance of both creating good first impression and good quality response is essential during an interview.

  22. I do not agree to the above statement.

Although for job interviews, it is often believed greatly that the way interviewees answer questions and the quality of the responses is the primary factor of determining the success of the interview, in reality, the success of the interview does not solely depend on the quality of responses given by the interviewee.

This is because at a job interview, interviewees are presenting themselves in a way which convinces the employer to hire them for the job positions. The dress code of interviewees thus plays an important part in determining the succuess of a job position. For instance, an interviewee can have quality responses to the questions posed during the interview. However, if he or she does not have an appropriate dress code, this thus affects her professionalism as future advocates of the particualr job which he or she is applying for.

On the other hand, when interviewees show that they at least take the effort to look presentable with appropriate dressing, it conveys the message to the employers that they actually take pride in the job and are sincere in applying for the job. It also leaves a positive first impression to the employers, thus increasing the chances of success of the intervew. Thus, both dress code and the quality responses are vital factors which affects the outcome of the interview.

Personally, I think that both the appearance and the quality of the response matters. Although it might be unfair but I believe many people judge a stranger based on their first impressions. Only with good first impression, the person will then move on to interview you. Hence, the appearance will matter here. However, having said that, the quality of your response will then further determine your suitability for the job. As even with good appearance but no substance in your answers, the interviewer will most likely not hire you.

Hence, in a nutshell, I think that these two factors build on each other and only with good appearance and good quality answers, you will then be able to secure your chance to get the job.

  24. I agree to this comment to a certain extent. Even though surveys have stated that 95% of the interview is based on how you look instead of what you say, I feel that it may not be entirely true.

In my opinion, different interviewers might look out for different aspect to grade their interviewees. Some may feel that first impression matters most while some solely look out for the quality of your answers given and the way you respond to their questions.

Dressing up and projecting a good visual impression is important in a sense as it shows interviewers that this interviewees values the interview, respect and is keen in this job. Thus, he/she would take the time off and made the effort to dress up professionally. By doing so, interviewers would already have a positive mindset towards this interviewees and hence, be more attentive to hear out the rest of the interview.

On the other hand, quality of response is important as the questions asked by the interviewers are mostly questions to judge if this interviewees fits into their organization; the quality, knowledge and experiences this person have to perform well in their future job. Hence, if the reponses given are poor, the chances of the interviewers hiring you are low despite how nice one have dress up to impress the interviewer.

On a whole, I feel that both dressing up for interview and quality of reponses are eqaully important. Interviewees should take note on both aspects if he/she really wants to impress and ace the interview.

  25. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I disagree with the above statement to a certain extent. I believe that dressing up properly and appropriately for interviews would project to the interviewers a good first impression. When you see someone dressing up for an occasion (in this case an interview), you would know how serious this person take this matter. It shows how strongly this person wants this job and how ready this person is for the interview. Thus, most probably the interviwer would be more interested to listen to what the interviewee has to say. Versus a person who dress sloppily, it does not really give a good impression to the interviwer and somehow it might turn off the interviwer.

However, the quality of the interviewee's response plays a larger role in the interview. When that particular interviewee gives a structured and proper answer, it shows how much the person knwos about the field and the job. The way the person answers also shows how prepared and confident that person is. So no matter how well the person dresses up but is unable to answer the questions well, he/she would not be the right person for the job.

In conclusion, I think that both factors (dressing up and quality responses) play important roles in making that person a suitable conadidate for the job. First impressions are as important as giving quality answers to impress the interviewers further.

I feel that it is equally important for both the interviewer and interviewee to dress up nicely for the interview. I find that first impression really counts because dressing up for the interview will give the other person the impression that there is mutual respect between them.

I find that both visual impression and quality of responses are equally important for an interviewee. The dressing up will help the interviewee to gain a good impression from the interviewer because it tells the interviewer that you are serious for the interview. Secondly, the interviewer also wants to see that you are presentable if the job requires you to meet up with customers on a daily or frequent basis. Besides, the quality of response will help the interviewer to have a gauge of whether you are suitable to carry out the tasks and responsibilities of the particular job.

I believe that both are equally important. It is important to dress up and look professional as well as having a good quality response.

It is essential that we portray as very formal and professional look so that the person interviewing as will take us seriously. Rather than to show up dressed extremely casually and let the interviewer think of us as a joke and that we are not that keen on working in the company.

Along with the professional look, it is equally important that our answers to the interview questions are logical and appropriate. If both of these things are present, there would be no doubt in the interviewer's mind of not hiring you.

  28. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I do not really agree on the comment above as I felt that the first impression of a person really counts.

Of course, the quality of responses does matters a lot more than how a person dresses up for an interview as through the response of the interviewee, the interviwer can know whether the interviewee is up to the job or not.

However, dressing up neatly and appropriately for an interview not only shows a good first impression but it is also a form of respect for the interviewers, as well as the job that he/she is applying for.

So, I felt that both dressing up appropriately and the quality of response are important in an interview as both of the qualities let the interviewer know whether the interviewee is really interested and serious about the job/post that he/she is applying for.

I do not agree with the statement. I feel that both the first visual impression and the quality of the interviewees' responses are important during an interview.
Apart from being confident during the interview, one has to be sure to make an outstanding first visual impression as the first impression is like a "sample" of who you actually are.
It just takes a person a quick glance (3 Seconds) for him/her to evaluate you when you meet for the first time. In this short period of time, the person forms a perception about you based on your appearance, body, language, mannerisms and how you are dressed. The first impression can nearly be impossible to reverse or undo which make the first encounters extremely essential as they set the tone for all relationships that follows.
Therefore, by projecting a good first visual impression is as important as the quality of the interviewees' responses.

Personally, i dont agree with the statementto a certain extent.

First impression do matter for me. If you are dressed appropriately and formally, it shows your seriousness for the job.It works vice versa, if the way one dresses is very sloppy, the future employer will think that she is just going for the interview for fun.

Yet at the same time, the quality of your interview will determine whether you suit the job. For instance, if one is unable to give an appropriate answer during his/her interview, then she will not be shortlisted for he job.

Hence, these 2 points work hand in hand.

  37. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I do not deny that the quality of one's response matters greatly. However, I also believe in protraying a good first visual impression at an interview.

This is so as the first impression can determine the attitude interviewers possess during an interview towards the interviewee. Good responses may go unheard or viewed in biasness if there is a tarnished first impression; furthermore, interviewers may be more willing to listen to responses when feeling positive.

Being visually appealing and acceptable also unwittingly tell interviewers about an interviewee's general attitude. Hence this may also be a criteria interviewers look out for in an interviewee.

Moreover, dressing appropriately is also an exhibiting of effort on the interviewee's part, conveying positive feelings about the interviewer to the interviewee.

Thus, I believe that a good visual impression and giving good responses work collectively.

What do you think about the comment above?

I do not agree with the comment above. In fact, I felt that it is important that interviewees dress up and project a good first visual impression as well as providing a response which is of good quality.

I felt that when one goes for an interview, it is the first overall impression that he or she gives to the interviewer. Often, personality is expressed through one’s dressing. Therefore, the moment the interviewees walk in to the office, it is the dress code which first captures and allows the interviewers to roughly determine the type of personality the interviewees bring with them. Furthermore, dressing up professionally will show and tell the interviewers that you are really keen and interested in this job, you respect the interviewer, the job and yourself. It also shows that you are taking the process seriously and that made the effort to look professional. Usually, the interviewers tend to look at an interviewee's dress code first before evaluating his or her performance. Therefore, I felt that it is important that interviewees dress up and project a good first visual impression.

Nevertheless, the quality of your response also matters. I felt that both dressing up professionally and the quality of one’s response complement with one another. If an interviewee dresses up professionally yet lack of quality response, he or she might still be rejected. I felt that through the interviewee’s response of the interview questions, the interviewer can roughly gauge the interviewee’s standard of English, level of communication, and his or her analytical thinking.

we all know that first impression is very important, and it greatly influence the interviewer decision of whether to hire you or not. if we do not dress appropriately, the interviewer might wonder if that is your usual dress code if you are in the centre. we do not only interact with children when working in the childcare, but we also need to interact with parents, visitors, evaluators(from mcys etc). what will parents think if they see your inappropriate dressing? what would visitors think of the centre, would they consider enrolling their child there? how would evaluators think of the centre, would it affect their evaluation of the centre?

though it us not essential to dress too professionally for the interview(because we are not interviewing for a manager job), we cannot dress sloppishly too(because we are not interviewing for a coffeeshop auntie job). the type of dressing is also determined by what we are interviewing for.

  40. Personally, I disagree with the above statement as I feel that the first impression really matters a lot. One who dressed up appropriately and formally will show how the person viewed the interview as well as portraying his or her attitude towards the interview. Through the person’s dressing, it will show if the person is serious for the job or not.

Even so, giving quality answers in an interview is also an important factor as the response given enabled the employer to determine one’s interest and passion for the job.

Hence, I would say that the both factors on dressing well and giving appropriate answers in an interview should work hand in hand.

sometimes dressing problems can be due to unexpected circumstances, but i will only accept it to a certain extent. the dressing should be at least jeans and t-shirt. something presentable that tells me that the person still has some sense of dressing.

of course it will be great if both factors are present !!

  44. I disagree that interviewees dressing is not important and project a good visual impression. I feel that as a human being, we like to look at something that are pleasing to the eyes. If the things ae nt pleasing enough, we wont even bother to look at the things inside. This is the same like presenting ourself for an interview.we will look at how the person present him/herself before considering the content of the interview. If the person know how to present well, the interviwer already hav gd impression on her. Thus, this will affect the interview session and questions that are posed.

Even though it would be good if our dressing do not matter during interviews, for it's too much of a hassle and also superficial, unfortunately, it do matter a lot!

First impression really lasts forever. You wouldn't want the interviewer to have a bad first impression of you just because you are dress too casually. It is almost impossible that no one ever not judges someone depending on the outer appearance during the first meeting.

If the interviewee dresses inappropriately for the job interview;t-shirt and berms, she may not be taken seriously by the interviewer and might miss the job opportunity despite giving good responses.

It would be better if the interviewee dress appropriately then get a good first impression and then a better one with the good responses he/she gives later during the interview. =)

I disagree, with reference to the above mentioned statement.

A good first visual impression is vital as it could possibly affect the interviewer’s view of you; whether you view this opportunity as a important one to you and takes it seriously or if you come off as one who is sloppy and is not seriously with work.

This will eventually affect how attentive the interviewer will listen to the quality of your responses for questions that may follow. One may have a perfect quality response for the interviewer’s questions, however if the interviewer is uninterested to listen to you, all preparation effort would go down the drain.

I do agree with the second sentence. Other than dressing up, the quality of responses given is taken into account to certain extend. It shows how much understanding one have, the quick thinking as well as reflecting the EQ of an interviewee.
It takes both to seal a job, therefore dressing up and providing good responses have to work as one.

  50. I think it is equally important for interviewees to dress up and also provide good quality responses. The way you dress up for interview, depicts how you viewed this job opportunity as, and also how much you respect the interviewer. Furthermore, the interviewer is someone that is unfamiliar with you, a total stranger, thus, the first impression is very important as a head start of everything. If you set a good impression, interviewer is more interested in knowing more of you and more interested in hiring you since you have set the priority right and understand the importance of presenting yourself in front of a total stranger. In any field of work, we have to interact with people, thus, as an employer, I will definitely look into the dressing. It will also depict the interviewee’s attitude in work too, whether he or she is serious or sloppy.

I disagree with the statement above because first impressions are important. To me, if i were to interview someone who is a complete stranger to me, how he or she dresses and carries himself or herself will tell me something about the person. We pick up alot of non verbal cues from people and they tell us something about people. If someone dresses well, it shows that they do want to respect and try to impress their potential employers. It tells me an employer that he or she takes this seriously and would make me feel important as we're not wasting each other's time.
However,i do agree that quality of the response is crucial. Beneath that nice exterior, there has to be quality and prefessionalism. With the two together, one can bring across a confident and well prepared self.

I disagree to the above statement to a large extent. Because first impression is very important, just like a boyfriend and girlfriend. You wouldn't want a boy that you like to see you in a crumpled tee shirt and a three quarter khaki green pants, with hair all messed up nails filled with dirt the first time?

And besides, it's true that quality matters no matter what you wear. But being at work is being at work, we need to be realistic and know what we should or should not do in different type of settings/events. I do not agree with this statement as I believe that interviewers first form their impression of an interviewee by looking at how the person presents his/herself during an interview. It is unquestionable that the quality of responses given by the interviewee is an essential ingredient to sucess during an interview. However, by projecting a positive visual impression it sends a strong message to the interviewer that you indeed take the effort to present yourself well and thus this implies that you are indeed serious about getting the job that you have applied for. First impressions matters as interviewers do look at it as a criteria in assessing the interviewee's potential job performance.

  55. I think it is important that you have the qualities that fits the job that you are applying for. By the end of the day, the interviewer would still based on your qualities instead of your dressing.

However, certain marks would be provided to the dressing itself. The way it dress protray the your character and personalities. Thus, judgement would be make on the dressing. If you are applying for jobs that would be based on your looks. Dressing up is definitely important. The way you dress would also tell if you care or really "want" the job. If your dress code is inappropriate, like wearing too little for a job interview for childcare teacher. Most likely the interviewer would not want to hire you.

I disagree this statement to a large extent. I feel that first impression is really important, especially for interviewees.

I believe that when the interviewers starts to have a good impression of interviewees, it's like half a battle won. All the interviewees need to do is to have confidence and do his or her best at the interview.

I feel that when the interviewers do not have a good impression of the interviewees from the start, his or her mind may be "switched off" a little. Hence, no matter how perfect the responses are the interviewer may only listen part of it subconsciously. Therefore, it will be more difficult for the interviewee to pass the interview.

  57. I personally disagree with the above statement as I believe that first impression portrays the personality of a person. Through the way the interviewees dress, interviewer will be able to see the quality that the interviewees have such as being neat and discipline. If the interviewees were to dress inappropriately it might reflect the personality of the interviewee as being disorganized or someone messy. Therefore, appropriate dress up and the way the interviewees project a good visual impression in very important.

Only with good first impression will the interviewer have a good impression in mind. They will be more convinced with the answers given as the interviewer as set a positive mindset of the interviewees. In addition to that, a good visual impression comes with quality response during the interview. Therefore in comes as a package before the interview decides upon the interviewees to be hired.

Regarding the above statement, I disagree with what have been mentioned as I felt that projecting a good first visual impression and the quality of interviewee’s response are of equal importance.

After the interview assignment which we had a few weeks ago, I have learnt the importance of dressing up appropriately for job interview. Dressing up appropriately for job interview does not only serve to impress the interviewer but it is also a form of respect to the interviewer and to the interviewee. In a formal job interview, interviewee’s dressing portrays the image he/she want to present and it also reflects on his/her attitude towards the job.

On the other hand, the quality of the interviewee’s response is also of equal importance to determine if he/she is qualified for the job. Normally, an interviewee is shortlisted for the job based on the quality of his response and most importantly, how confident he is when he delivers his responses. In my opinion, I feel that an interviewee will be more confident if he is appropriately dressed and is well prepared for the interview questions. Hence, dressing appropriately to project a good first visual impression and the quality of the interviewee’s response are definitely of equal important.

  60. I do not agree that first impressions are not important. Although many say “looks do not matter”, the fact is that people are judged based on the way they look. The reason is simply because, when you walk into a room, people judge you on your dressing for the simple that they do not know you and have not heard you speak. Therefore, the only way that they can assess you is based on your outer appearance.
Many of us judge people based on how they look and if anyone tells you otherwise, they are probably lying. How many times have you walked along the street and saw someone dressed in a manner that may not be the fashion nowadays? Did you eye the person and gossip about him or her once you are out of earshot? Chances are you probably did. What if you saw someone dressed in a worn out shirt, torn pants and well worn shoes? Would you think that that person is probably jobless and has dire living conditions? But what if that person in actual fact has his or her own business and is doing quite well?
Through that, we can probably see that dressing does indeed portray a certain image. However, I am not saying that the quality of one’s response is not important but rather, I feel that one’s response either strengthens or changes one’s impression of you. If you do no dress well, the chances of the person listening to you properly is very slim and when that happens, whether you speak well or not does not matter much anymore. Therefore like what people also say, “Make a good first impression!”

By dressing sloppily or casually, you are sending a message that you do not view this interview as something important. Likewise, dressing up for the interview portrays that you value the interview.

Similarly, dressing up for the interview gives your future employer a chance to gauge what you will wear when you are working at the childcare centre. This will leave a better impression on your future employer rather than have them think badly of you.

This is so because it is undeniable that humans are judgemental therefore they usually form an overview of how someone is like upon their first impression. Although the response is important, projecting a positive and presentable image is also as important for an interviewee as interviewers will balance out between judging interviewee's response and the first impression that they perceived. It is apparent that a presentably lady with great responses will be able to grab a job from a shabbily dressed lady with great responses.

  65. Although the quality of interviewee’s response is critical in order to achieve a successful interview, I differ that it is more important than interviewee’s physical appearance. Instead, I believe that both dressing up appropriately and the quality of responses by the interviewee are equally important.

Personally, I think that interviewee who dressed up appropriately, gives interviewer a good impression whereby the interviewee respects and values the importance of having the opportunity to attend the interview.

In addition, it shows that the interviewee takes the efforts to groom his/her appearance for the interview as well as enhances his/her profession. Thus, the positive impression given to the interviewee means that half of the battle (interview) is won.

On the other hand, if an interviewee dresses sloppy for the interview, it demerits his/her chances in getting the job. Interviewers’ impression may tend to be bias since their first impression of the interviewee is negative such as lazy and disrespectful.

Nevertheless, the quality of interviewee’s response plays an important role in having a successful interview. Often, interviewers take into considerations on interviewee’s positive abilities, skills and self that are beneficial to the company; this can mainly be achieved in the quality of the responses provided by interviewee.

Therefore, both good visual impression and quality of responses are equally important and should not be neglected if interviewee is determined to be a suitable candidate in getting the job position.

  66. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

What do you think about the comment above?

I disagree with the statement. Honestly, our first assessment on anything is reliant on our 5 senses (visual impression) and not cognitive stimulation(quality of response). For example, when selecting something to eat, a person would be drawn to food that are sensually appealing before rationality kicks in and you begin considering the nutritional value. This is human nature and it is hard to defy.

I would not place dressing up as an extremely important component but its an added advantage. The more suitably dressed you are for the interview the more likely the interviewer would have good stereotype image of you. Perhaps you are dressed in what a typical teacher would wear to school for your interview for a teaching position. When you look the role/part, the interviewer would naturally think you are the part or in this case a teacher. By no means am I suggesting that by dressing well, it will get you the job. Having good responses are important as well. Without good responses, no matter how well you are dressed the interviewer will not hire you.

  70. Upon reading this question, the perfect scene to illustrate my answer hit me in the following:
I recall watching the movie, the Pursuit of Happyness, shown in 2006, staring Will Smith, based on the true story of Chris Gardner.

In one scene, Chris was rushing for a very important interview a large cooperation after being arrested for failure to pay parking tickets the night before.

He arrived at the interview, in a cotton grey jacket, draped haphazardly over a white singlet and jeans, with paint stains all over his clothing. He had been painting the house on day before when he was arrested. In spite of his best efforts to clean himself up, he still looked like a mess.

Amidst all the professionally dressed, busy characters in the office as he proceeded to the interview room, Chris stuck out like an eyesore.

Yet he persisted in carrying himself with dignity and confidence; as if he were already one of them.

    The interview
Straightening his worn shirt, he entered the office, where a panel of interviewers awaited him. "Chris Gardner," he stepped up and introduced himself, shaking the hands of the interviewers warmly, "Good morning, how are you?", in spite of the different responses of the interviewers.

Positioning himself in front of the interviewers, he began, beaming, "I have been sitting out there (the waiting room) trying to come up with a story that would explain my being here dressed like this. And I wanted to come up with a story that would demonstrate qualities that I'm sure you all would admire here; like :earnestness, or diligence; team playing -something. And I couldn't think of anything. So the truth is, I was arrested for failure to pay parking tickets."

"Parking tickets?" one of the interviewers exclaimed, much to the laughter of the others.
"And I ran all the way here from the police station," ended Chris.

"What were you doing before you were arrested?" asked another interviewer.

"I was erm, painting my apartment," he replied, gesturing to several paint stains on his body.
"Is it dry now?" Shrugging, Chris replied, "I hope so." "Jay (in reference to the interviewer who got him the interview) says you are pretty determined."

"Oh, he's been waiting outside the front of the building with some forty pound gizmo for over a month." retorted Jay, in response to his colleague's comment.

    “ He says you’re smart.”
    “I like to think so,”
“You already started learning on your own?”
    “Absolutely.”

“Jay,” continued the interviewer, withdrawing his attention from Chris, “How many times have you seen Chris?”
“I don’t know. One too many, apparently.”
“Did he ever dress like this?”
    “No, no, jacket and tie.”

“Chris,” the interviewer began, returning his attention to him. “What would you say, if a guy walked in for an interview without a shirt on, and I hired him; what would you say?”

Thinking for a moment, Chris replied, “he must have had on some really nice pants.”

Chris’s application was approved with immediate effect.

So, is it possible to arrive at an interview dressed like a garbage man and still pull it off? It is, but it takes sheer wit, ability and a positive reputation built over time with perseverance in maintaining one's integrity, to shine in spite of one’s appearance.

Dressing up appropriately for the interview portrays an image that the intervewee is professional and sincere with regards to the job application. Although it is important to have quality responses during an interview, it is equally important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Dressing up allow the employers to feel that the employees respect and view the interview as an important event.

Dressing could determine the way how you present yourself such as personality and character. For instance, wearing sloppily might give the employer an image that you are being unprofessional and do not wish to get the job. In addition, before the interview begins, the employer would have taken a look of the interviewee from the top to the bottom. Most probably, the interviewee might lose the job due to the poor dress code. Therefore, I feel that it is equally important to dress up and project a good first visual impression and also having a quality response.

  74. I disagree with the statement above. Dressing up for an interview is an absolute must for any job interview. The term " DRESS FOR SUCCESS" heavily applies here.

According to Allbusiness.com, a first impression is made in 27 seconds. The first impression an interviewee gives is one that is crucial, as it is the very first judgement that the interviewer will make. Even with an outstanding resume, an inappropriate outfit may cause an interviewee to lose a potential career path.

For example, corporate companies expects employees to present a professional image to clients. If a candidate turns up for the interview dressed in clothes that are too fanciful, he/she will be turned down as it may provide the signal that he/she is not serious about the interview..and perhaps even the job.

What potential candidates can do to provide a good first visual impression to employers is to first ask for the appropriate dress code for the interview. No matter the job scope, always appear well groomed and professional looking.

Combined with an outstanding resume and impressive responses during the interview, the candidate might just be a shoe-in for the job!

  75. Personally, I think that although the quality of our response is important, dressing up for the interview is equally important too.

Imagine if you are the interviewer; You see this applicant who isn’t dressed appropriately but yet is able to give the kind of response you’re looking for, it makes you wonder still whether would you hire the applicant. What if she dresses up like this when she comes to work? These are some of the questions that would run through the interview’s mind. For parents who drop their children off in the mornings at the childcare centre, or attend a parent teacher conference would look at this teacher, they would wonder whether is this particular person able to teach their child, are they up to the standard?

But that aside, it is also no point if the person is able to dress up but yet not able to provide a response that you are looking for. Therefore, both dressing up for the interview and giving a good quality response is equally important.

  76. I do not agree entirely with the statement. Indeed, the quality of the response is very important. It reflects what the beliefs of the person, how equipped and prepared the person is, his/her confidence level and such.

However, a first impression is very signficance as well. Thus, dressing up is very important Dressing up would refer to following the proper dress code for the interview; formal wear, covered shoes and light make up will be ideal. The effort the interviewee takes to dress up, reflects on his/her attitude as well.

  77. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.

I do not agree much to this. I feel that first impression is very important no matter what. Even if the quality of your response is very good, but if you are not well dressed, it will not show that you placed any importance in applying for the interview.

However, if you are well dressed, you will leave the image that you are very earnest in applying for this job and you will leave an impression on the interviewer. Thus, if your response is not exactly ideal but its near to the response that the interviewers wanted to hear, you might be able to get in to the company.

  78. If we come from the perspective of the employer saying this quote, then this comment could sound like one that the employer would make to ensure that the employee focuses on what the employer feels is more important. On the other hand, if this statement were to come from an employee, it would then be an opinion with many perspectives opened for discussion.

If given the latter situation, as much as I would like to agree with this statement because I would personally want to place heavier weightage on the quality of the response, I have to say that I myself would also rely on how the person dresses in order to give me some form of judgement of how that person is. Granted, how the person dresses might not necessarily portray how the person works, but I think that it has become a cultural norm that interviewees should dress up, so much so that not dressing up is not acceptable anymore. If we take this point into consideration, then, yes, I believe it is very important to dress up.

  79. I feel that both a good first impression and a quality response is necessary. A good first impression is important because from there, the interviewer would take on a different approach during the interview. Let's say the interviewer got a bad impression of the interviewee and did not think he/she would suit the job, the interviewer would probably not put much effort into listening to what the interviewee has to say.

However, a quality response is still required from any interviewee; and if an interviewee with a bad first impression is able to respond well, the interviewer might change his/her mind too.

  80. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

It takes an average of 7 seconds to form a first impression of somebody. To me, I feel that a first impression is very important. An employer will be more interested in someone who is well-groomed. Personal grooming and hygiene is also a form of respect. By grooming well, it shows that you respect the job, respect the employer and that you respect yourself. An employer may also feel that if you are unable to take good care of yourself in terms of appearance and groooming, he may not want to entrust you with responsibilities.

The quality of responses is also of utmost importance. However, an employer may have such a bad impression of you that he is unable to absorb the kind of answers that you are giving.

Thus, i feel that personal grooming is of utmost importance and should be observed at all times.

  81. As much as we'd like to agree that 'Appearance isn't everything...', we would eventually have to beg to differ.

As human beings are very visual people, the initial contact that you have with your interviewers is crucial as it would the first determinant of the impression or image that the interviewers would have of you. Though yes.. Quality responses would still determine your ability to take on the job. But both appearances and quality responses will go hand-in-hand with each other and would probably secure you the job.

  82. Am I seeing things? How is being professionally dressed “not important”?! Your interviewer made a first impression of you the first seven seconds you step in the room, even before you speak your first words. Being poorly dressed only communicates to your interviewer that you are not serious about the job and you are not professional. It will certainly turn me off if one cannot be bothered to dress up professionally and I would have already made a mental note during the interviewing process not to hire this person.

I trust that no employers are looking for interviewees who are fashion-gurus (except for the fashion industry, of course), but the least one can do is to come in formal shirts and skirts/pants when meeting your potential employer for the first time.

I am appalled by this statement! One must certainly be professionally dressed for interviews!

  83. I strongly disagree with the statement. Even though what ultimately determines an employee's is probably their portfolio and their performance during their interview, I strongly believe that one should dress up neatly and formally for an interview as the first impression is very important.

I think by dressing up properly sends a clear message to the interviewer that you respect yourself, them and the job. It also shows that you are keen to do the job.

Therefor, I feel that even if the job doesn't require formal wear, it is important to wear proper attire during an job interview.

I believe that first impression do count. The way of being able to present yourself well enough during the first meeting, will potrays how the seriously an individual sees the importance of getting the job. In addition, the interviwer/employers are visual "animals", who would take take first impression into consideration. Therefore, it is important that an interviewee is presentable in such a way that it is visually pleasing so that the focus will be on the quality of the interview.

  85. I do not agree with the statement.

I feel that it is important to give a good first impression to the employee as a first impression on someone would have a great impact on a person. It is hard to change an impression set on someone especially if it isn’t a good one. For example, if the interviewees dressed sloppily, the employer would form an impression that the interviewee is not interest in the job and does not make an effort to set a good impression. It would probably take more effort for the interviewee to express their interest in the job if they are really keen.

However, it is not just the interviewee’s dressing that matters as the quality of your response matters as well. If you are dressed very well but is not able to express your interest in the job and respond well to questions, then it does not reflect well that you are capable of getting the job as well.

All in all, it is both the visual first impression and the quality of answers that makes a good interviewee. It comes hand in hand and both are of importance.

  86. I disagree to the statement to a large extent. Personally, I think that dressing up and projecting a good first visual impression is important. Your first impression determines your sincerity of applying for the job; it can also be a form of respect to the interviewers as well.

However, I do not neglect the fact that having quality responses to your interview is important too. Both aspects are important to build create a more professional look. This boils down to three factors, attitude, sincerity to applying for the job as well as how you handle situations that might be coming after you. For attitude, you need to look good and presentable to have a mutual respect from and for each other. Whereas, sincerity takes place in how well you understand the company, how you dress, and how you convey your strengths that fits into the organization. And lastly, for handling of situations, it is important as how you response to the questions being posted to you. It determines how well you will react to the situation and handle it well.

'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

What do you think about the comment above?

I feel that the quality of your response is the most important part of the interview, and that an interviewee should prepare with good quality responses to the questions the interviewer may ask.

However, first impressions are the ones that last, and dressing well will contribute to a good first impression. In that sense, I do agree that dressing well is important, to show the interviewer how determined you are to get the job.

In my opinion, someone going for an interview should look nice, but also blow the interviewer away with his/her quality answers.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Both are of importance, however, the latter weighing more than the former.

Although clichéd, first impression always, always counts. The way you dress reflects on how much the interview means to you and it reflects your respect for the job, the interviewers and most of all, for yourself. A good first visual image might not influence the individual's suitability for the intended job. However, it gives a clear signal to potential employers that the interviewee is serious about the job.

The quality of an individual's respond determines his suitability for the job, capability to carry out appointed duties and room for other potential. Under an interview environment, the interviewee will be expected to answer questions in an impromptu manner, which is a major influence on the quality of response. He must have the required knowledge and the ability to effectively convince the potential employers of his possession of knowledge and suitability for the job. Dressing up will only serve as a bonus and not an independent point of consideration.

  89. I will have to disagree with the above statement.

First impressions always count. Especially for job interviews, where the interviewer knows not even a single bit about your personal self, it is really important to dress up in order to leave a good impression on him/her. Having done this, it will already be considered half the battle won. Just imagine what the interviewer will think when someone dressed sloppily enters the interview room? The interviewer will have the perception that the interviewee is not taking this seriously and that he/she is wasting the interviewer’s precious time.

Apart from projecting a good first visual impression, the quality of the response given also do matters. Responses given should be confident, clear, straight to the point and truthful. Nothing turns a potential employer off as compared to a dishonest employee. In such cases, the employer will definitely have second thoughts with regards to hiring this particular person because honesty is not a credible factor here.

  90. I disagree.

It IS important for one to appropriately dress up and project a good first visual impression ESPECIALLY in an interview.

Your main goal for going to an interview is to land yourself with a job you're really in need of and nail it at the first try.

The interview session is the only time you can impress, not only with your responses and portfolio, also with your visual-appeal! It only shows how serious you are about giving an all-rounded good impression, further proving that you're worth the time.

The ability to visually-appeal someone shows confidence and professionalism. As a representative of the company, every employer would want the best image for his staff in order to bring benefits to his company. And for him to do so, it's only best that he gets the best out of the best candidates. Not everyone will be able to communicate with them. And people hardly approaches someone who looks unkempt and unapproachable.

Therefore, dressing up to an interview is important because I believe many employers out there lookout for professionalism and visual appearance counts as a support to the ability to converse well.

  91. I disagree with the statement above. I think appearance is equally important as the quality of response in an interview.

When one dresses up appropriate for the job offered, it reflects that he had made preparations for the interview. Consequently, it informs the interviewer that he is interested and serious about applying for the job.

Applying what I've learnt in OB-HRM too, I believe that the interviewer would be more interested to listen to the responses of an applicant looking at what she wears. Generally, a person who wears ironed and decent clothes is perceived differently from a person who wears revealing clothes. Therefore, the appearance of an applicant will affect the communication process with the interviewer.

In all, appearance and the quility of response are crucial factors in determining the success of the interview.

  93. I disagree with the statement.

It is vital for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression.
Many people think dressing up for interview should be formal. However, I feel that as long as the dressing is smart casual it would impress the interviewer. Interviewees should also look neat and pleasant.

Additionally, the quality of response is vital too. There is no point hiring a person who projects a good first visual impression through their dressing but do not know how to respond for the questions. An interviewee should display eye contact, proper body language and good voice intonation during the interview. Furthermore, the interviewee should also prepare in advance for the interview so that he/she would be able to give quality answers for the interview questions.

Therefore, the appearance and quality of response in a interview works hand-in-hand in creating a good first visual impression.

  94. I agree with the statement to a certain extent.

To me, I personally fell that dressing up for the interview is just as important as the quality of one's response during the interview. These two factors supports one another during an interview.

An interviewee might not be well dressed for the interview, however with quality responses, it would help boost the impression the interviewee had.

However, being well-dressed would show the interviewer the professionalism and earnestness to work. Interviewer might hence set a high expectation based on the good visual impression. However, without quality responses, this could result in them being marked down.

An interviewer would consider employing the one with a better response than dressing.

  95. I agree with the statement to a certain extent.

While I cannot fully vouch for my opinions, since I am by no means an experienced job interviewee, I have to say that I feel that the quality of my answers during an interview would rate me as a better possible employee as compared to an applicant who dresses up very well, only to end up not being able to give answers to the questions being asked.

However, that is not to say that I don't believe in dressing up well during an interview. A well-dressed applicant would definitely give off a better first impression as compared to a shabbily-dressed one. That, I believe, would give an applicant the extra edge in doing well for the interview.

However, it is also important to note that one shouldn't dress up TOO nicely during an interview, as it might give off the impression that one is high-maintenance, and would not be suitable to the job of an early childhood teacher.

  96. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I think that there should be a balance to both aspects.

It would not have made sense if you dress up professionally, however the quality of your response is bad. Simliarly, no matter how good your response might be, if your dress code is wrong and made a bad first impression, you would not ace the interview as well.

Employers might faced up to many applicants in one day, how would you be able to make a deep and good impression for them to remember you? They might remember you for your professional response, but your dress code was inappropriate. Because of this, they might eliminate you. No doubt there would be better applicants who dressed professionally and answered questions the way an employee expects.

Therefore there should be a balance among dressing up for the interview and the quality of the response, both are equally important.

  97. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

I disagree with the above statement to a certain extent.

I feel projecting a good first visual impression is also as important as quality of response as both affects how I come across to the interviewer. There is only one chance for the interviewee to make a good impression so it is vital to make a positive first impression. Even with all the good qualifications and work experience, if the interviewee’s dressing is sloppy and not appropriate, it will only have a negative impact on the interviewee even though you have answered the questions really well. It will have a positive impact on the interviewer if you are dressed and groomed appropriately. The positive impact will even be enhanced when the interviewee portrayed an enthusiastic personality that matches with the occupation.

Moreover, quality of response is important in an interview as there will be no point if the interviewee is dressed appropriately yet she/he does not know how to respond well to the questions. This will only harmed the image of the interviewee towards the interviewer. The interviewee should be prepared for the interview by going through questions that may be asked and at least practice to speak eloquently and give off quality response to project a good image.

  98. 'It's not important for interviewees to dress up and project a good first visual impression. Instead it is the quality of your response that matters more.'

“First impression counts.” Being visual beings, people would first judge others according to their outlook. Therefore, I would very much disagree that it is not important for one to dress to impress since an individual’s first-time appearance would usually be long-lasting. In addition, I believe that one’s appearance is the expression of his or her attitude towards life. With the effort to dress up, it demonstrates that the individual values the importance of the event; in this case, an interview. However, there should be a balance between the quality of a person’s outlook and his or her responses. This denotes that it is as important to be mentally ready; either in preparing for the interview or have basic knowledge in that field. In this way, the interviewee would not appear to be “good on the outside yet empty inside”. Thus, I conclude that both the appearance and responses of an interviewee is equally significant as they are qualities that an interviewer looks out for.
